PicPocket Books: kids' picture books for the iPhone and iPod touch review/giveaway

There’s no denying it. The digital age has fully arrived. It completely permeates our work space and also our home and family life. The children born in this decade and the next are literally introduced to technology in the cradle. Many traditional tools, accessories and staples now have digital counterparts. The classic picture book is no exception.

In July 2009, PicPocket Books released a series of new applications: children's picture books for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The apps are available on Apple’s iTunes Store.

PicPocket Books makes quality children’s titles enjoyable on-the-go in situations where it's impractical to bring the physical books. The digital books are not meant as replacements for print books or the valuable time parents can spend reading to their children, but as educational and culturally valuable iPhone apps that are alternatives to video games or movies, especially for families on-the-go.

PicPocket Books publishes titles as true-to-the-book as possible, using full-color illustrations, professionally recorded audio and interactive highlighting of words as the story is read. We encourage early literacy and instilling an early love of books and reading in children.

Round Is A Mooncake and I Can Do It Too! are delightful titles for young children from the popular San Francisco publisher Chronicle Books. The "Big Stuff Books" are heavily geared towards boys and early literacy, and My Friend Isabelle is a sweet children's story in classic picture book form. Originally published as board books, they are intended for toddlers or very young children. We have over 20 titles on iTunes - some, like Papa Gatto, Tire Mountain and Sleeping Beauty are longer picture books for slightly older children. Each app has the full color, high res illustrations of the original book, plus an audio track and a learn-to-read option: each word is highlighted as it is spoken on the audio track to encourage emergent readers to connect the spoken and printed words.

These picture books are productions of traditional, published picture books that have been re-designed for the iPhone. They are meant to be very faithful to the original works and specifically promote and are intended to encourage early literacy and forming a love of books and reading in early childhood.

We believe that if reading picture books on the iPhone means that more families are reading together and that more kids have more exposure to storybooks, then they are a great option for the tech savvy families of today.

PicPocket Books is offering two lucky winners a chance to choose three titles each from their selection of picture books.
